Vastu

What is Vastu Shastra?

Vastu Shastra, often simply referred to as Vastu, is an ancient Indian architectural science that lays down principles for designing and constructing buildings in harmony with nature. The term "Vastu" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Vas" which means dwelling or habitat. Vastu Shastra is believed to create a positive environment by balancing the five elements of nature - Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space (or Sky).

The core philosophy of Vastu revolves around the idea that the design and layout of a building can impact the well-being, prosperity, and happiness of its occupants. The principles of Vastu Shastra are based on various cosmic energies and their interactions with the structures we live and work in.

Vastu Shastra for Modern Residence

Applying Vastu principles to modern-day apartments can be challenging given the constraints of space and layout. However, many aspects of Vastu can still be adapted to promote harmony and positivity within apartment living. Here are some practical Vastu tips for modern apartments:

Selection of Apartment:

  • Choose apartments that are open and receive ample natural light.
  • Preferably opt for apartments with a regular or square/rectangular layout rather than irregular shapes.

Entrance and Main Door:

  • Ensure the entrance door is well-lit and in good condition
  • Avoid having obstructions like shoes or furniture near the entrance.
  • Decorate the entrance with auspicious symbols or images for positivity.

Directional Placement:

  • Aim to have the main door facing north, east, or northeast for positive energy flow.
  • Place heavy furniture like beds and almirahs in the southwest corner of rooms.

Bedroom Placement:

  • Ideally, the master bedroom should be in the southwest corner of the apartment.
  • Avoid placing beds directly under overhead beams.

Kitchen Placement:

  • Position the kitchen in the southeast corner of the apartment.
  • Keep the kitchen clean, organized, and well-ventilated.
  • Ensure the cooking stove is placed in the southeast direction.

Living Room:

  • The living room should ideally be located in the northeast or north portion of the apartment.
  • Use light and soothing colors for walls and decor.

Colors and Decor:

  • Use Vastu-compliant colors like light shades of green, blue, white, or beige.
  • Avoid dark and gloomy colors, especially in bedrooms and living areas.

Bathroom and Toilets:

  • Try to keep bathrooms and toilets in the northwest or west of the apartment.
  • Keep bathroom doors closed when not in use and fix leakages promptly.

Windows and Ventilation:

  • Ensure good ventilation in every room with windows that open to allow fresh air and natural light.
  • Keep windows clean and free from obstructions.

Plants and Greenery:

  • Place indoor plants in the northeast corner to enhance positivity and air quality.
  • Avoid thorny or sharp plants inside the apartment.

Electronics and Gadgets:

  • Minimize electronic gadgets and avoid clutter, especially in the bedroom.
  • Keep workstations in the north or east direction for better focus and productivity.

Energy Cleansing:

  • Regularly cleanse the apartment space with methods like burning incense or using saltwater to mop the floors.
  • While it might not always be possible to implement all Vastu guidelines in a modern apartment setting, adopting a few key principles can contribute to a more balanced and harmonious living environment. Ultimately, creating a space that feels comfortable and aligned with your needs and preferences is essential for well-being, whether or not it strictly adheres to Vastu Shastra.
